Kerala’s Palakkad District, in the Ottapalam Taluk and Pattambi Block, is home to Ongallur Grama Panchayat. Spread across the villages of Ongallur I and Ongallur II, the Panchayat covers an area of 31.68 square kilometres. Its boundaries are marked by Pattambi Municipality to the east, Koppam Grama Panchayat and Vallappuzha Grama Panchayat to the north, the Bharathapuzha River to the south, and Shoranur Municipality to the west.

The geographical characteristics of Ongallur village, situated on the northern bank of the Bharathapuzha, may have contributed to the origin of its name. The word “Ongal” carries meanings such as hill, mound, elevated land, elephant, and ship. Combined with the suffix “Oor,” meaning village (as found in traditional Malayalam lexicons), the place name “Ongallur” emerged. This itself reflects the distinctive topography of the Panchayat.

The northeastern regions of the Panchayat are characterized by hilly terrain, while the southwestern region along the Bharathapuzha generally consists of low-lying plains. Kerala Land Resource Maps indicate that the Panchayat is situated at an elevation of over approximately 1,500 metres. In Palakkad District, the western regions adjoining the Bharathapuzha are generally plains. Since Ongallur was once among the highest inhabited areas in the region, this may have contributed to its name.

Due to its elevated geographical position, Ongallur was also considered strategically important. The Ramagiri Fort in Ongallur was one of the principal forts of the Mysore rulers in the Malabar region.
